Prior to Hurricane Season
- Have your equipment inspected and maintenance performed. This will ensure that there are no loose wires or safety hazards that need to be addressed. As well, that the system is running properly.
- Check to see that your outdoor unit is properly secured to the concrete slab. If not, this can become a 200 Lb projectile in the event of a storm. A hurricane rated concrete slab with the proper hurricane straps can withstand winds of approximately 170 MPH.
- Have your air conditioning, electrical contractor or utility provider install a surge protector. This is a good idea not only for your air conditioner, but for all your major household appliances.
- Trim any large tree branches close to your air conditioner. These branches could break off during high winds and cause damage to your outdoor unit.
- Also walk around your home and secure any and all loose items such as patio furniture and children’s toys. These items may become flying projectiles and end up causing damage to your air conditioner.
Several Hours Before the Storm is About to Hit
- Lower your thermostat a few degrees lower than normal. This will help with the comfort of your home during the storm
Right Before the Storm
- Turn the air conditioning system off at the circuit breaker. This will help prevent a power surge or an electrical fire that could put you and your home in danger.
- Cover the outdoor unit with a tarp and bungee cord. This will help prevent flying debris from getting lodged inside the unit.
After the Storm and Power is Restored
- After inspecting your equipment for any obvious signs of damage, turn the air conditioner on.
